Santa tree ornaments

Hello! I'm doing counted cross stitch Santa ornaments and would like to make the Santas' beards fuzzy. What kind of yarn or floss might I use to accomplish this look? (I've tried yarn but find it balls up and shreds when going through the canvas holes.) Thank you!!
