Thank you for removing that link, Carrie. I know which site it is as I had tried to sign up for it late last year. You are right, they want *way* too much personal info from "members".
They wanted either my cell phone number (which they would verify, so no making one up) so they could send text messages about their products, or I had to allow them to send me frequent e-mails about their products (I call that "spam"
, or I had to make their site my homepage (no, thank you), or I had to provide names and e-mail addresses of other stitchers (which they would also verify), or, I had to send them pictures of projects completed from their charts (I have done none of their charts).
You earn points by providing any of this information. All for more sales for them, they hope. Kind of like a pyramid scheme, IMO.
I joined for the initial 30 points and got a free chart or two (hardly worth it) but didn't provide anymore info, so I only get frequent e-mails from them now saying I can join for a reduced rate! Or they send a $10 gift certificate in their e-mail. When I click on the link for the gift cert, it brings me to a page asking what membership I wanted, for a minimum of $9.99 a month! So if you don't provide them with the marketing tools they want to sell their products, you have to pay a monthly fee. And this is all for their "Free Charts". Amazing.
Thank you, Carrie, for watching out for us!

: Hi Carrie...
:
: Sure wish I had paid more attention and came
: to the same conclusion you did before
: getting involved ... Now of course they have
: my info and I just have to hope that it's on
: the up and up but am glad you have alerted
: all to a possible problem... I for one will
: be more careful in the future...Thanks...
: Love this message board....gladys...

: I read the threads on this post and I have
: also tried to access this site in the past.
: It would never let me in with the login info
: that I registered with. When seeing that
: others are having problems logging in, I
: decided to remove the link, for various
: reasons. I am skeptical about this site
: because of their terms - you can only access
: patterns after earning points. How do you
: earn points? You sign up other people - when
: they confirm their personal information on
: the site you get 30 points. The site tells
: you to post your link on message boards to
: get other people to sign up, and when they
: do points will be credited to your account.
: Since the link posted here was not to the
: website's homepage, but actually had a
: person's ID encoded into it so they could
: get points, I felt that they were just
: trying to rack up points for themself rather
: than just let other stitchers know about a
: good site. (I'm not saying Connie was doing
: that, she could have found this link
: anywhere and it might be for someone else
: completely).
:
: I do not feel right about my board listing a
: site that makes my users give out their
: personal information and receive emails or
: text messages on their phones, or solicit
: their friends to just download a free cross
: stitch pattern. I have no problem with
: people posting links here for other sites,
: but I will remove any that are offensive or
: are asking for way too much personal
: information like this one was. PLEASE be
: careful when signing up for things on the
: internet! If a site wants your full address
: and mobile phone number just so you can
: download a free cross stitch pattern, it is
: not worth it!
