ours was a miniature shelty (so close to yours, i think) and he too had arthritis in his back legs. it got to the point where we felt bad making him go outside to pee because he had to go down our deck stairs and back up again. but unfortunately this is part of pet ownership and eventually you have to go thru it.
good luck with your collie and i hope when the time comes you are able to get thru it and realize that going thru the bad is a small price to pay for all the good your pet brought you.
