I wish your mother and niece the best in their experiences with cross stitching. It's a fun hobby. I'm not sure what you are looking for. It's been awile since I stitched a stamped cross stitch project, but I remember that the pattern is stamped onto the fabric and I didn't need any other pattern to look at, just the instructions to tell me what colors to use where (everything I needed came in the kit: stamped fabric and floss). Counted cross stitch means that the pattern is not stamped onto the fabric but the stitcher counts the threads of the fabric to determine where to stitch. The patterns for counted cross stitch use different symbols for the different colors, and each symbol stands for one stitched "x." Some patterns also use other stitches, like an outline stitch, in addition to the cross stitches. Some stitchers dislike outline stitches, but I find that using these dark lines of stitches really adds something to the finished project; there are patterns that only use cross stitches. I think that stamped patterns have larger "x"'s that are easier to see and stitch, so this would be an easy way to start stitching. I hope I've helped. If you need more help, just ask.
