You are right, some mares will take on an orphan. We at one time had a Huckleberry Bey daughter named Huck's Fashion who after she foaled took in a week old foal who had been rejected by her mother. Fashion just saw that poor baby and nickered to her and the foal ran in and started nursing and Fashion raised both those foals. She was a special mare. There are not a lot of mares like that (most you have to work with to get them to accept another foal if they will at all).
Precious however gets very nervous and protective when she has a foal. While it might have been possible to get her to take this baby, I didn't want to chance it. Better safe than sorry.
