Karen sat in the huge transatlantic airliner, looking out of the window at the unfamiliar ground below her. She was excited at the thought of her holiday in Europe, far from the cares of ordinary life, and far from the the possibility of meeting anyone she knew. She could have a lot of fun in Europe, and no one but she would ever know...
Her thoughts were interrupted by the announcement that the plane would be landing at London's Heathrow airport in a few minutes. She was anxious to get out of the plane and find somewhere to smoke. After six hours' deprivation, she was in desperate need of a cigarette or ten.
After what seemed forever, she was finally out of the plane and heading towards immigration and baggage reclaim. She looked around for the oh-so-familiar 'no smoking' signs, and saw none! Could she really smoke here? Well, other passengers were lighting up, so, silently rejoicing, did she.
Once she was clear of customs, she headed for the undergound station at the airport where she could catch the 'tube' into central London and find her hotel. The train rattled and rocked its way through the western suburbs before disapprearing into the network of tunnels that hit it from the centre of London.
She consulted her map: the hotel was just round the corner from the station at Gloucester Road. She emerged into the cool, golden sunlight of a British summer evening and found her hotel. Once checked in, she pondered her next move...
