Hey Amy - you're shutter speed is fine. You can get away with 1/250 or 1/200 as well (assuming your lens has a max aperature of 2.8). Autofocus is almost necessary for sharpness and a 35mm is also an asset. Holding a clunky Mamiya for action shots is just not practical. Get a good telephoto lens and a good 35mm with AF and you'll be fine.
