The big down side I see to the cameras you mentioned is the lens size and veratility.
Remember a camera is just a box with a hole in it...the quality comes from the lens.
I have a Minolta Dimage 7. It is my 2nd digital camera and both my husband and I agree it is great and when you "move up" it will not be a throw away, but will make a great back up. I retails for about $1000 & you will spend around $350 more for memory. I now have the NIKON 100 and the 80 -200 lens. However when you get ready to "invest" in this equipment be aware that the lens will usually interchange with the film formate cameras.
To some extent you are right about public perception. But I got started with a Sony Digital Mavica, but people liked my pictures and thats what matters. I would not recommed it now, I look a some of my really great shots that pixelate if you try to make them 8 by 10.
