Posted by Erika A few friends have digital cameras but nothing with the kind of zoom I want (at least what would be 300mm in an SLR). What would be comparable to this in a digital camera? 5x? 6x? I want to buy now but I'm afraid I can't afford the kind of zoom I need for good ringside photos. Each year technology improves and what was once big bucks becomes affordable -- should I hold out a bit longer? Any insight from the field is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've been taking photos with SLR for a few years and am now looking into buying a digital camera. I'm wondering how much zoom I need to get good horse show photos (mostly dressage/eventing)? Can I find anything worth having for under $1000 or around that?
