What kind of equipment do you have?? Are you using a flash?? A covered arena is probably the most difficult to shoot. It is like a backlit situation. You will not be able to shoot on automatic, because the backlight will fool your meter and the horses will come out very very dark. I would take a light reading off of the dirt in the shade and then manually set your camera. Hopefully you are using a flash and can use it for fill. Good luck.
