Hi Lynn,
I'm a photograph myself, and my girlfriend is competing on high level on the other side of the fence, and no, I would never picture her in a showjumping event using a flash.
We have in fact discovered this very first hand during training sessions. You will seldom see/find a horse literally spoke, but you do see a lot of poles dropped by distracted horses. And, don't forget that the angle of view on a horse is almost 180 degree to the side, i.e. it has only a small blind spot straight back when looking straight ahead.
Yes, I know, in bigger events flashes are a part of the game that horses and riders simply have to accept as a part of the difficulties at the show.
