First, make sure you don't use a short lens. I don't know if you are shooting medium format or 35, but you will need to use a longer lens than you normally do for people portraits. Otherwise the head will look waaay tooooo long! I'm also not sure which breeds you will be shooting, but most horses do not look great with a straight side headshot. If you will try to turn the horse so you see the bulge of his opposite eye, you will NORMALLY get the best angle. Of course there are always exceptions, but that is a pretty good rule of thumb. The next most important thing is to get the ears up and a lot of expression. VERY few people will buy photos of their horses without good ears and good expression. Good luck... Gail
