Posted by MN~Sue on 5/16/2005, 1:33 pm I recently bought a pedometer to count my steps and other stats. I love it! Have any of you used one before? I had an old one that came from somewhere, but it was not accurate at all, so a waste of time to use it. I did some research online and found one I liked, recommended at about.com, so ordered it from WalMart. It arrived last week and it has been interesting and fun to use! I hope it will serve as a motivator to walk more steps every day. Have you heard of the 10,000 step idea? You can google that topic and find out more about it. Basically, it is about getting 10,000 steps in a day - they are referring to just all the steps you take in a day during your normal routine and/or including those you take when exericising as well. The thinking is that if you get that many steps in a day, it will lead to better all around health. The only way I get 10,000 steps in is when I add my treadmill routine to it, SO that illustrates how important it is for me to use my treadmill, or some additional INTENTIONAL exercise daily!!! They say for the avg. person (average stride), 1 mile equals about 2,000 steps, so 5 miles a day would be the equivalent with that stride. For me, however, having a short stride due to being only 5', 10,000 steps is closer to only 4 miles, haha. NO wonder I can never keep up to hubby and others LOL! Just like I was thinking in regard to Terry's and my speeds on the treadmill, that I probably could never walk the same pace he does, no matter my fitness level, due to my shorter stride. The pedometer instructions tell you how to measure your stride and then you enter that info into the pedometer as well as weight to calculate calories burned. I have tested this pedometer with our treadmill odometer/calorie counter and it IS accurate Walk to better health........! Going to join me?!! Love,
Hi Friends,
The pedometer I bought also counts aerobic steps separately, which I really like. When you walk for 10 minutes straight, it starts counting it as aerobic steps. It calculates total number of steps, aerobic steps and duration, calories burned, and miles walked. It also has a 7 day memory and a clock. It is the only pedometer that I know of that allows you to place it somewhere besides on your waistband, so I thought that might be an important feature. So far, I have only used it on my waistband, but it is good to have the option of other ways (for example - in a pocket, in a purse/bag). It has some other nice features too and is reasonably priced. I read that it was NOT worth buying any that are too cheaply priced, they won't be accurate and they won't hold up. This one is really nice. I paid under $30 for it (including shipping - as our local WalMart and no other local stores sold this one). If you are interested, let me know and I can link you to it at the WalMart site.
