Posted by Sue (MN~Sue) on 1/18/2003, 1:14 am, in reply to "WL Day 7 -- down 4 pounds !!" FOUR pounds lost!!! Good for you!!!! VERY happy for you and proud of you. Isn't it great when you finally get to SEE your efforts paying off Yes, I did see Suzanne Sommers on the View that day. I didn't catch the entire segment, but got the gist of it, I think. I heard her saying that what she is doing is similar to Atkins, but that she did not believe in leaving out any food groups (I agree totally with that!!!) and had made modifications on the Atkin's approach. Also heard her talk about eating the higher carb meals early in the day, to provide the fuel we need - also agree with that thinking. I believe our body needs the carbs to fuel our cells to allow us to move and our brain to function. Terry lost weight years ago and has successfully kept it off for years now. He eats high carbs for breakfast and lunch - for example, breakfast of fresh fruit and bagel plain. For lunch it is fresh veggies and fresh fruit again. SOMETIMES he may have a sandwich with it. Then for dinner, he eats protein and some carbs (veg). He eats pretty much any food, but watches the fat and empty sugar calories. His body definitely needs the fuel of carbs for his life style/job to keep his body well fueled for the physical parts of his workday and his brain as well I am not following any particular diet plan. Just the common sense stuff of cutting down on the fat and simple sugars (as Terry did/does) and it has worked great for me too. I am cutting calories and eating more healthy/nutritious foods. I feel the key is pretty simple, one must just eat less calories to reduce the weight and I feel making healthy food choices are important to health and giving our body the nutrients it needs. I don't believe in any special combo/diet to follow to lose weight, just believe if one eats less calories than they burn, one will lose weight I need to get as motivated as I was for the 2 months before Christmas, haven't quite got my act back together yet, but have definitely not gone back to the way I was eating previously that got me in this position, haha. Really watching the fat content/empty calories that I did consume before. I wouldn't think of eating the way I was before, with some of the foods I was consuming! NOW snacks are baked taco chips with salsa, for example, instead of deep fried potato chips ~ that sort of thing! The baked potato chips are good too. I have avoided the WOW chips, due to my intestinal problems, wouldnt be smart for me to eat that product! Dried apricots or fat free hot chocolate instead of a piece of candy or high fat cookie. Once I get my weight to where I want it, I am sure I will be able to eat some of those foods in moderation again, just as Terry does. I also don't feel there is any harm in having an occasional treat either, because I think the denial thing can really sabotage a weight reduction attempt. I have always told myself, if I really feel I have to have a bite of something sweet, I will do it - after all, that is nothing compared to eating sweets on a regular basis. A bite of cookie might be all it takes to satisfy that need I feel. I think that sometimes if we try to fill that need with other foods, we might actually end up eating more, because we aren't getting the satisfaction we were looking for - as long as one is able to just have that small amount to satisfy the taste we are craving. It seems to work for me; I then don't feel deprived and I found that only a couple times did I really feel I needed to do that. I think knowing that I 'could' have it, made me not 'need' it - if that makes any sense, haha. NOW, I just have got to get the mind set back to where it was to do my best again ~it will happen Oh, I remember reading your comment about your hubby and the popcorn. Terry does the same thing, haha! The aroma was driving me nuts! Kim had mentioned the Reddenbacher 94% fat free popcorn and it has been what I needed when those popcorn smells get to me! I know you are not eating after 7 at night, so that could be hard, if that is when you hubby gets out the popcorn! I havent made a cut-off time, so would allow the popcorn in the evening - not sure how you can combat that problem - I know how the smell can drive one nuts, LOL! Maybe have popcorn yourself before that time in the evening? It is really a good low calorie, low fat snack. It does not taste as good as the higher fat ones, but I prefer it to NONE and have gotten used to it I see you are asking for encouragement with the exercising ~ you can do it, TJ!!! I read Gloria's post above to you and see she is going to add her exercising back in (still recovering from her very recent shoulder surgery, so has to be careful). You two can encourage one another. I haven't gotten with the exercise part yet, but I am okay with that, knowing that I can try to get more weight off first with the dieting angle. I have to cater to the mess of endo I have going on inside, so doing this through diet alone at this time is okay by me. I hope to make changes in that area, once I can get the endo addressed and removed, so that I can once again MOVE without so much pain being stirred up. I just am not willing to increase my pain levels through exercise with this mess I have inside of me at this time. So I will have to be patient there too. Continued success, TJ!!!! You are doing great!!! Keep up the great work - the pay off will be SOOOOOOOOOOO worth it, keep that focus!! Love,
Hi TJ,
AND hopefully feeling some better too, physically! I actually enjoy feeling that bit of hungry feeling as I feel less encumbered and just felt lighter and moving easier with lighter eating; cutting out the extra fats and sugars felt GOOD physically for me.
He also works out hard exercising 3 days a week, plus his job is physical, not every day, but throughout the week at times with being a forester and being 'in the field' to do a percentage of his work and just physical things he must do working with equipment and the like too. It can be quite physical and he HAS to be in shape to do it.
Of course, one could do this by eating ice cream every day and consuming less calories than what one was doing before and lose weight, but of course, that is not healthy to provide all the nutrients needed. You hear of these goofy diets, like that - sure you can lose weight, it is a simple equation of calories ate, calories burned ratio - but not healthy, of course!
I am very happy for the changes I have made thus far, that have 'stuck' with me!
Sue
