The Ayers college desegregation case stemmed from a lawsuit filed in 1975 by the late Jake Ayers Sr. on behalf of black college students. Ayers claimed the state's three historically black universities were being underfunded compared to the state's five majority-white universities. Board member Carl Nicholson of Hattiesburg, president when the Ayers settlement was negotiated, worked closely with Layzell. "I've had a wonderful relationship with Tom," Nicholson said. "I think he's done us an excellent job." Nicholson expects Layzell to retire June 30. "He's going to help us on a consultant basis on issues like Ayers and other matters," he said. A national search will be conducted for a successor, Nicholson said.

If the IHL had not taken off on Fleming Layzell would have been gone long time ago. Can you dig the hypocrisy in Nicholson's comments from this HBG American article of today. Nicholson has been after Layzell for a long time! Good riddance when Layzell and Nicholson both go. Then after some others leave or die off we can make some progress! Look at the last part of the article. Layzell will stay on as a consultant. In other words, they are paying him off to leave and keep his mouth shut. Typical IHL.
