Thank goodness for Kristin Chenoweth and Douglas Sills. They breathe real life into the latest Encores production of Kern and Hammerstein's MUSIC IN THE AIR....
Kristin and Sills are total delights. They get laughs that most performers wouldn't get. Kristin has ample opportunity to display her operatic voice, and Sills is also in great form in a role that is very similar to the Oscar Jaffe role he played in the Actors' Fund ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY benefit several years ago....
As I've said, I'm not a fan or operetta or of many of the '30s musicals, so MUSIC IN THE AIR certainly wouldn't be one on my Encores wish list. Nevertheless, I'm always grateful for the opportunity to discover a previously unseen show. Some deliver, some don't. MUSIC comes up short for me, but Kristin and Sills are worth seeing and genuinely fun to watch.
