I had a dream in which I was walking in a forest and found a house. I walked through a dutch door (open on top but closed on the bottom) to see 30 women sitting on high stools at shallow counters on which they were doing some kind of craft work with their hands. The women faced the walls on all sides of the square room. In front of each women on the counter, between her forearms below her chin, was a lit candle. If a woman breathed too hard, the light would go out and I felt that she would be dead. So the women had to be very careful how they breathed as if they could only do shallow breathing in order to stay alive.

The dream goes on but I'll stop here. I had this dream about 8 years ago and never understood it. But within the last month, I realized who the master is. I still cannot put my finger on the master but I know the master is associated with the patriarchal repression of women in the workplace (at least). It was shocking to see women imprisoned like this. I thought I was free and could work and live where and how I wanted. But this dream showed me the insidious lack of freedom which haunts all of us women. This dream is one of many which has prompted me to form venusandeve.net so that women might find their voice and be able to breathe freely and deeply.
