New Zag recruit

Just got a verbal from a 7 footer from Montana.

The thing I find funny is some posters are making a big deal about him also being on the high school tennis team. How he must spend a lot of time on the tennis court. How it must mean he has good footwork.

If you look at the stats listed, he went 12-10 playing doubles on his high school team (in Montana). Anyone that has played high school tennis knows that means one thing. That means he pretty much sucks at tennis.

I was mean about the tennis, but my point is being a back end player on a high school tennis team is like being the same on a high school golf team. Playing .500ish in doubles (meaning you are not one of the top three players in your school, so you are not playing singles) is equal to shooting a 110 over 18 holes. It is a hobby, not a skill set nor a time drain.

As a former high school doubles tennis player....I have to agree. The highlight of my tennis career was when our coach decided to stack the doubles teams in a match against Turlock and put me at #2 singles (essentially, throwing me to the wolves). I beat the guy 6-1, and then proceeded to beat the #3 guy and nearly beat the #1 guy. Still don't know how that happened.

Also: the #1 doubles team for Sonora that season featured a long-haired 6'9" kid who played center on the basketball team. He did NOT have good footwork (although it was a b###h to get shots around him at the net with that crazy wingspan). The best part was that his partner was about 5'2". We used to call them the Jockey and the Filly.

Don Solo, as captain of our Dons racqueters in the late '50s, I always stacked our team. We had one premium & nat'l ranked player who could win at #1, but the rest of us had to really scramble to win. But when the Zags ventured south we could easily cut their gut for a win. Seattle was a different story as was San Jose St with #1 Nationally ranked Whitney Reed. SCU & SMC were toss ups. So just maybe this 7 ft Zag stiff will blame his doubles losses on his partner & present an impenetrable wall at the net!

As long as we're playing truth and dare, I played tennis in high school also...#3 single and doubles as well...
I still dabble a little in the game of love.

My impression is that its definitely worth taking a risk on the kid. 7' juniors in high school don't come around that often-especially ones that want to commit to your school.

Will he be good right away? Probably not.

Will he be good by the end of his college career? Probably.

I have no clue. I doubt you have one either. That is just an out and out guess.

My main point is eliminte that tennis portion of why it might help him or why it has kept him off the basketball court. It is a hobby that he is not too good at.

More Zag nonsense. If he was any good, many, many schools would have offered him a scholarship. Yeah, I know, he was "under the radar" and Kansas was about to offer him. Blah blah blah

Of course it's a guess- but even will foster who had absolutely no basketball savvy contributed by the end of his 4 years so my guess is that the coaches can round him into a formidable player.

I will give you, if he stays at Gonzaga for his senior season, he will almost, for sure, be at least as good as Will Foster.

Although Foster did make the highlight play of his life at WMG.

And considering one of the most well known analysts calls him the best center in the west coast for his age he will probably do okay. Maybe you guys know a little more than Greg hicks tho.

As to this kid?...who cares?...Like Zags4life said, he may be good, he may not. We won't know until he plays.

Yeah, I will take the blame for this one. I was laughing more at the Zag posters making a big deal out his being on the high school tennis team when it is obvious he is not very good and probably does not spend a lot of time on the tennis court.

The starting QB when I was in high school was also on the badminton team. Not because he loved the sport or played it at home, but because it got him out of class early several times in the spring semester and we did not have to go by dress code if you wore your uni if you were playing that day (basically meaning badminton and tennis were great excuses to wear sweats to school). I am guessing this future Zags reason for being on the tennis team is much closer to that than love of or skill at the sport.

As for the recruit, very much in the Tao Xu category. He is tall. Let's see him play.

It is interesting that this is at least the third time you have posted something here within 15 minutes of Angelo posting the same thing on the Gonzaga board. All under somewhat of a junk IP (basically, everything shows coming out of their one host area).

i live in san diego, and i'm posting from work. i'd be interested in seeing examples of these other times.

not a fan of his at all. in fact, if you check out my posting history (based on either username or ip-- but if you go by ip you'd have to use my home one as well, which is through time warner cable, also san diego-based), i'm very much a zag lover and very much NOT an apologist for the zag board or the moderators.

i actually posted it here before i saw it on any of my zag-related haunts... i had just seen this thread and refreshed my.yahoo homepage and there it was.

we zaggies admittedly need very little data to love our team/players/recruits. you guys seem to need just as little data to hate on us. i figured, since you brought this kid up, that it was fair for me to post a little more data on the topic.

i'm not sure how this counts as "hype machine". it's pretty much the one piece of third-party information that there is on this kid anywhere.

i made no claims, no arguments, no nothing. i merely posted the first bit of data (admittedly in the form of an opinion column) that this thread has seen.

find me something that says he's overrated or going to disappoint or anything else and i will just as happily post it on the zag board.

Hard to tell from Yahoo photo, but his Montana kid appears to have Kevin Willis Syndrome--short arms.
