WCC and APR

The NCAA released its APR Public Recognition list today, which recognizes programs that finish among the Top 10% in the APR rating for their respective sports.

As per usual, the WCC aquits itself very well, with (also as per usual) Portland leading the way.

The full APR rankings will be released in a week.

Here is a list of all the WCC teams that earned Public Recognition for being among the Top 10%:

Portland (6): Men's Basketball; Women's Cross Country; Women's Soccer; Women's Volleyball; Women�s Track, Indoor; Women�s Track, Outdoor.

Gonzaga (4): Men's Soccer; Women's Golf; Women's Cross Country; Women's Track, Outdoor.
Men's Golf Loyola Marymount

Santa Clara (3): Women's Rowing; Women�s Water Polo; Women�s Track, Outdoor.

LMU (2): Women�s Track, Indoor; Women�s Swimming.

BYU: Men�s Basketball.

Pacific: Women�s Cross Country.

Pepperdine: Men�s Volleyball.

San Diego: Women�s Track, Outdoor.

Oops, sorry... messed that up.

LMU actually has three:

LMU (3): Men's Golf; Women�s Track, Indoor; Women�s Swimming.

All the APR means is that the schools pass the kids and they proceed academically.

It is not a national standard.

If a WCC school wants their athletic department to get a high APR score, all they have to do is make sure the students get decent, passing grades.

And some WCC school's academic requirement/standards aren't as high as others.

Which WCC schools are you inferring as substandard to the rest of the conference?

I think the entire conference is pretty top-notch academically and think the premis that a school would collude with the professors of each member of the woman's golf team to ensure that passing grades are obtained, is a bit much.

I'm not saying that "tutors" don't take tests for star athletes or that shenanigans of some sort or another don't take place. I just pull my blinders on and drink the kool-aid that it only happens at the BCS power-house football state institutions and NOT in the WCC.

I think you'd be surprised to see how the WCC institutions are ranked.

For example, did you know that Pepperdine only admits a league low 34% of its applicants? While SMC admits a league high 79% of theirs.

BYU leads the conference with ave SAT scores ranging from 1150 - 1370. While again, SMC was last with scores 990 - 1220.

Some surprises that jumped out at me: Pacific only admits 42% of their applicants, SCU(m) is a pretty decent school with an SAT range of 1120-1340. And USF is near the bottom of the conference admitting 71% of applicants (7th in conference) and have ave. SAT scores of 1000 - 1220 (9th in conference). For some reason I thought USF would have been higher than that.

in 2011, USF admitted 58% of their applicants.

As an accountant I can tell you that statistics are often manipulated. Regardless, your number means nothing without comparing to the other institutions in the same year. Is it TOTAL applicants or just undergrad? My number placed USF near the bottom when compared to the other institutions within the conference. See my link below. BTW: I was meaning no disrespect to your fine institution. I think my point was that #1, I was impressed and defending ALL WCC institutions and #2 was surprised that USF was so low compared to its peers. Meaning I had valued the USF education higher. IT should also be noted that those are just two factors of MANY in determining a schools worth. But two factors that were relevant to the post above mine. Admittance rates could vary year to year based on capacity and other factors that have nothing to do with a schools academic prowess.

More importantly, why is a Zag fan spending so much time researching and cherry picking admissions stats about USF? Dont you have anythng better to do?

Application numbers are among the most ambiguous numbers a college provides.

Some schools only count an "application" as being the full boat - application, letters of rec, essays, transcipts, etc.

On the opposite end, some schools will count an "application" as anyone who even begins filling one online.

Furthermore, with more and more schools going to a "common app" model, how do you count a kid who fills out a universal online application and your college is among the twenty schools s/he checks (thus, submitting an application) but then never follows up with any of the supplmental materials?

Really, it depends on how a school defines "application". What if someone fills out a complete application but never submits letters of recommendation? What if they get letters of recommendation and transcripts, but not a complete application? What if someone starts an application online, but doesn't finish it?

Each school has their own definition, which is why comparing application and admittance numbers is really not all that interesting or insightful. A ballpark number for comparisons, sure, but not all that telling.

When you start a rebuttal to statements regarding substandard academics with "Which WCC schools are you INFERRING(emphasis added) as substandard to the rest of the conference?" you are not doing your school any favors.

Good point. Quickly typing and not proofreading. Ooops.

But then again, my school was just a dumb state school. I only scored a 1080 on the SAT so I suppose that is expected.

The problem I have with the APR it doesn't necessarily reflect the actual classes taken. A school could have Geology 1 (Rocks for Jocks). Music Appreciation 1(how to listen to country or rap) and Alternative Lit 1 (the wit and wisdom of Archie and Jughead). Is there anywhere where they see if student-athletes are taking classes with real students. We have all heard the rumors of Jason Kidd's class schedule at Cal.

I agree with you to a certain extent... it's not really fair to compare large state schools to small private schools.

However, comparing within the conference I think is pretty fair. Sure, there are bound to be some cupcake classes at some (or all) schools, but for the most part I think the WCC institutions are on par with each other.
