My guess is the only reason Monty is playing in Stockton this year is that his former Stanford boss Ted Leland who is now at UOP pulled in a favor. They should not expect it to be a recurring trend.
Appreciate that it might not have been the proper forum but maybe those other coaches in attendence from the WCC need to be more aggressive in that setting and call Monty out instead of laughing.
Let's face it it is not only Cal but virtually all the BCS schools who are unwilling to fairly schedule. Maybe it is just me but I see this trend continuing and worsening unless someone steps to the plate and gets the situation changed. Meantime, fans like me will continue to reduce their interest in college basketball in general. The consequences could be a disaster to all programs, not just non-BCS programs.

I agree completely, first, with WCC coaches being a little more "angry" towards Pac-10 coaches; second, the trend is in full affect right now; and last, interest in cbb will lose a lot.
non-BCS schools need to be the aggressor - somehow some way? - because they are getting squeezed badly.
Note: Cal has agreed to play UOP at the Stockton Arena, not at their Spanos Center.

Well, the Pac-10 school do hate playing all Mid-Major Universities because they will lose prestige if they get beat. Second, they would lose a tournament spot and the Pac-10 school just want to corner college basketball with recruiting and marketing. Some of the Pac-10 would call WCC a second-tier conference, however, I think WCC is a decent conference and WCC teams better beat Pac-10 team show them what were made of! - Re: Chronicle article for all teams pre-Midnight Madness

I don't know what is meant by 'fairly schedule', but I took a look at Cal's schedule. They have Murray State, Princeton, Detroit, and Jacksonville. That is a handful of mid/low majors, plus a tourney with UCSB, Furman and Utah Valley State.

Exactly my point. With minimal exceptions there nonconference games against non-bs (excuse me bcs) teams are always at Berkeley.
Not to mention how many of those schools listed above are comparable to better WCC teams (maybe UCSB) and if the tournament is scheduled as most they only play UCSB if they both win game one.
Finally, a real significant point-in these tough economic times why not play competitive local universities instead of teams from Kentucky, New Jersey,Michigan, Florida, South Carolina and Utah? Remember, UC is a state institution funded by the citizens of California mostly. I suspect most of us have an inkling of the real reasons. - Re: Chronicle article for all teams pre-Midnight Madness

Cal's football team took busses to UCLA this weekend because of the economy. But they paid Eastern Washington a pile of money to play at Berkeley instead of visiting Fresno (and playing sa quality opponent) for free. The basketball program is handing out cash for these "guaranteed" games.
Even in these financial times, they'll take a bus 850 miles but pay out tons of "guaranteed" cash....I guess anything to avoid playing quality opponents on the road. - Re: Chronicle article for all teams pre-Midnight Madness

BCS teams playing 10 home games? Non-BCS schools allowed to play BCS schools ONLY on the road? Is this some kind of riddle I'm missing? Cal playing home games? Pepperdine playing AT ucla. It rains in Seattle? Nebraska is flat? Pamela Anderson has fake boobs? Keanu Reeves can't act?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't these match up on the schedule for the Pac-10?
SMC vs. OU
UP vs. WSU
USD vs. Stanford
and either USC or UCLA playing someone else in the WCC at some tournament???

The PAC-10 only worry about themselves because if the recruits start seeing mid-majors such wcc beating a big confrence such as the PAC-10. The recruits would pick the mid-major vs major conference. I would love for wcc to beat any of the PAC-10 school. - v. Pac-10

Beat Oregon and Washington State last year.
2004-05 played at Cal in the Coaches vs. Cancer exempt tourney and beat them and the time before that 1997-98.
Stanford won't touch us since 2003.
This season, Oregon again at Eugene. Possiblity of USC in second round of the Diamond Head Tourney in Hawaii.
Portland plays UCLA at the Anaheim 76 Classic in the first round this season

UP plays at UW, not WSU. Portland beat the Huskies at home (in Portland) last year.
The Pilots also play Oregon at the Chiles Center and, as MJ noted, UCLA down in LA.
Plenty of chances for Portland to make a statement against the Pac-10.

Good for UCLA playing a WCC team but will UCLA ever play at Pepperdine? Maybe, more significant, if Pepperdine were team likely to win the WCC would UCLA even schedule them? For example, did they play LMU during the Gathers/Kimble era (I honestly do not know the answer)?
