WCC recruiting

This is a very interesting link that details the ESPN grading of the 2010 WCC recruits up to date. All the coaches are really stepping it getting impressive players to commit to their respective programs. Grier class at USD really stands out so far.

LMU is recruiting at big man and PG right now.

I'm always very averse in trusting grades by these self-labeled experts. Unless a player is clearly a top-10 caliber, how do you grade thousands of high school kids from all over the country? Most of the time they're getting info thru the internet or 3rd party word of mouth, and slapping a grade to it.

I prefer to read an evaluation or description to get an idea, but nothing more than that.

Example:

this player received a 91 grade and considered high major. Does this sound like such a player?

He has feathery shooting touch out to the stripe and his foot work in the post is solid. However, he is very unassertive underneath the basket and a poor rebounder for his size. He doesn't appear to like contact and he is quite comfortable floating around the perimeter shooting 3's. Kramer has all the tools to play at the high-major level, but if he wants to make a significant impact at the high-major level he's going to play with much more passion and purpose.

something for everyone to remember when reviewing these espn grades (or Scout and Rivals obviously):

Jarred Dubois is phenomenal. And he only received an espn score of 73.

Kevin Foster is incredible. Didn’t receive a grade from espn.

Keion Bell was all-freshman. He received an espn score of only 76.

Kwame Vaughn received an espn score of 66.

I agree...thesze rankings are reaaly good for us "Board Pundits". When I look at the most recent team (USD) that took the crown away from Gonzaga only Jones was rated on ESPN.(sorry for the Jones reference, but it was too easy)

My personal thoughts are USD needs to go out and after the year they had last year...PR Campian!!!

The bottom line is to win...if a program goes out and recruits top ESPN rated players and wins? Then the system worked, if they didn't who's to blame coaching? For us Board Pundits...that could never be that case. Right?

I certainly agree these "rankings" don't really amount to much. Its just interesting to see that WCC is getting recruits that are ranked pretty high at least by ESPN.

don't get me wrong I agree. Even if the sole purpose is the WCC getting notoriety amongst recruits. And thanks for the link.

I really think the WCC has an edge in some respects. For one, USF, USD, LMU, are all in big cities that appeal to a lot of players. Portland is nice too and Santa Clara and Pepperdine have beautiful campus'. Saint Mary's and Gonzaga may not have quite the appeal but each share that tight knit family atmosphere. If WCC coaches continue to upgrade their respective programs this conference has some serious potential.

I mean if the WCC got better (maybe to the level of the A-10 or CUSA) and you had the choice to play in Malibu knowing that you still had equal opportunity of making it to the league... it would be tough to turn down.

i do note, however, that if these ratings are anything close to accurate, they reflect a badly needed reload at USD.

I agree strongpoint...but would challenge "reload to rebuild". When 3 of the top 4 scorers gone(Pomare: grdauation, Johnson: relationship with coach and Jones: family reasons). A USD rebuild was inorder...in the long run this will be better for Grier, with the spade card being held againust him that he can't win with his own recruits.

I personally like the reload approach RW, RB, KK and even MF approach in getting players that will fit and work in there system vs. stocking up on ESPN 'HIGH" ranking recruits.

But this is just my opinion...I could be wrong?

Well, I am dreaming of an NCAA Basketball Power House WCC-Mid Major Conference and it is only a dream for now. However, I do like what everyone is doing recruiting and improving in the longrun. The only way is up.
