Will they ever try to bring back University of San Francisco Dons Football

Hello Everyone, do you guy think that the University of San Francisco would try to bring back Football and I know they have tried in the 60s and 70s. However, some of the people in the bay area would love to have an NCAA College Football in San Francisco. It would be nice to have a football to watch and especially in the bay area. What do you guys think?

Hi SportyDons, that would be great to have the football team at USF because I love college football more than the NFL. If we do have a football team for USF I would buy a season ticket and attend all the games. The problem would be the cost to run the team and I am not sure how they would get the funding. However, I do like the idea having a USF football especially here in San Francisco.

I would support it. Have the team play at Kezar stadium like they used to. If high schools can afford football teams, why not usf?

I would love to watch the USF football team play at Kezar Stadium and I just hope they would have one somewhere in the future. I would definitely be a season tickets holder. Well, right now I am dreaming of the return of the San Francisco Dons Football team. I understand that it would cost so much money to start a team.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte took the next step toward adding a football program Wednesday by unveiling the payment structure and tiers for its permanent seat license program.

School officials will begin collecting money Thursday in hopes of raising $10 million toward the $45 million cost to start a team to begin play in the 2013 season.

"We are thrilled with the amount of support our fans have shown over the past few months for 49ers football," athletic director Judy Rose said. "Reservations for 49ers seat licenses have been robust and we are extremely excited to begin actual sales and thrilled to offer a variety of options to all of our fans."

The plan calls for selling up to 7,500 seat licenses, with 5,500 of those costing $1,000 per seat. Better seats, located near midfield and requiring an annual donation to the school's athletic fund, will cost $2,500 per seat license. The school also hopes to sell 200 high-end seats for well-heeled donors for an undetermined amount.

Charlotte's board of trustees voted in November to start a program that would begin play at the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision if enough money can be raised. The hope is to eventually move to highest level of Division I.

The school received commitments for 5,400 personal seat licenses at $1,000 a pop, but now they must start collecting the money during a severe recession. Fans will be able to pay in four installments over the next four years, with the first payment due upon purchase.

"I feel very confident with the list," said Mike Hummer, director of the school's athletic foundation. "We've stayed in contact with them."

With 22,000 students, Charlotte is one of the largest schools in the country without football. The school is known for its basketball team, which made the Final Four in 1977 behind Cedric Maxwell, and currently competes in the non-football Atlantic 10 Conference.

Even if the school can sell all the seat licenses, it still must find large corporate or individual sponsors to secure enough money to start a team. The school wants to build a 15,000-seat on-campus stadium, but might have to first play at Charlotte's Memorial Stadium.

The school has set up a Web site, www.charlotte49erfootball.com, that gives details on the tiers and payment structure.

Fans who purchase seat licenses will then be required to buy season tickets. Seat licenses will be transferrable.

Maybe I am being overly positive but I think USF could do it.

It would be expensive but we already have a stadium and a huge football fan base in SF that would love a college football team. SF is too large of a city to not have a college team and who better to fufill that than the storied Dons.

I feel with the proper PR work we could make USF "San Francisco's" college team instead of being that Jesuit school on the hilltop. All those 49er faithful could become Don faithful also. USC's fans for example are mostly made up of people who never went to USC (i know the lack of a pro team in LA contributes to this) but its possible.

We just need some wealthy donors and a strong push for football to come back. Anyone good with websites wanna create a bring back dons football site? I am sure we would all help get exposure.

The problem with bringing back a Football team is not even the initial cost in doing this...remember that funny little thing called Title IX. Any cost that would go to a football team would have to be matched in womens sports. Do we have that kind of maney (doubledown???)

Now if we did something like USD and did a non-scholarship football program, only the coaching, equipment anmd travel would be dollars that would have to be matched.

So as much as it would be a fun proposition....it is truly too complicated to sort out to make it happen.

Who would the football Dons play?

You cant start at the D-1 level and there are no D-II teams anywhere near San Francisco. The few remaining non D-1 teams are now Football Championship Series (formerly D-IA), i.e. Sac State and Davis. No more football at SF State, Sonoma State, UOP, SMC or SCU. USD plays, but has to travel far for opponents. WAY too expensive to run the program and travel.

When a few wealthy Santa Clara alums tried to bring back football 15-20 years ago they were told that they needed a $100 million fund just to get it going again. This was early '90s money, can't imagine what it would cost now. Anyone know if that group is still around? They had a web site for a while.

Well, I saw this article on at the ncaa site about Charlotte to begin selling PSLs and the school officials will begin collecting money in hopes of raising $10 million towards the $45 million cost to start a team to begin play in 2013. I agree it is very expensive to start a football team and maintaining it.

As much as I would like to see it back, two things stand in the way. The much maligned Title IX is one. The other, when USF played in the late 60s and early 70s schools could play Division 1 and basketball and Division 2 in football. That is no longer the case.

There is the 1AA or whatever they call is now that USD, Davis etc play in but travel costs are very high. Back east schools like Fordham and Holy Cross can take short bus rides for a full schedule. I do not believe that is possible out here.

I had a question about Title IX and how Stanford, Cal, etc. maintains it's obligations for this requirement.?? I don't see a woman's football team at those institutions - so how do they do it??

I would love to see football back at USF since this was the sport that I participated in.

Stanford also offers Field Hockey, lacrosse, squash, and sync. swimming to women, and not men to even it out.

Come on, people. Can we support and take pride in what we have instead of pining after what will in all likelihood will never happen?

U.S.F. has a rugby squad. TWO rugby squads, for that matter--men's and women's. Both would love to have our wholehearted support. But nooooooooo... here we are, talking about what would it take to bring back football to the Hilltop and who would we play and Title IX and blah blah blah. Meanwhile, our rugby clubs just do their thing, completely under the radar.

Allow me to be the wet blanket: Division 1 Football is never coming back to U.S.F. Even if Title IX would get abolished (dream on, people), there's simply no institutional support for big-time football--both here and the other WCC schools that dropped it. And unless we find our own John Arrillaga or the NCAA institutes a spending cap on programs (dream on, people), there won't be any funding for it, either.

Never going to happen. USF, SMC and SCU all tried and dropped it. Big costs and impossible to fund additional chick sports required by Title IX. Unless Privett is a closet football fan...

I like that "USF Rugby" site, it looks great.
It would be nice if the Dons and Broncos could play the Lions during the autumn, before the leagues start in the springtime.
Cal Maritime is such a tough club. The Keelhaulers pounded the Lions in the Div. II play-offs, last season. I think that the "Loyola" Lions finished the season ranked 14th out of over 200 Div.II clubs. We still use the "Loyola" only name, since the rugby club has been on campus for more than 50 years.
P.S. There is a site by a guy named Goff: "goffonrugby,com" that covers Div. II college clubs very well. "americanrugbynews.com" almost exclusively covers Div.I college clubs.
