If Santa Clara couldn't do it with a football stadium on campus and widespread fan support, it just isn't gonna happen. I know USF had a good few years with Matson, but SCU had back to back sugar bowl wins over LSU and an orange bowl victory. Went as high as 5 in the AP poll. Still, by the 50s, professional football, two platoon college football, rising public university enrollments, and the loss of Catholic school football in the bay area as a social vehicle for Irish and Italian immigrants, it became too costly. 1951, USF was done, SMC was done, 1953 Santa Clara dropped the program. We managed to play from 59-93 at a lower leve, and SMC was playing in the same level as late as 2003. It just doesn't make sense any more to play. Santa Clara has the money and facilities in place, with a few upgrades needed. USF, as above mentioned, lacks facilities for the sports it actually plays. I would love nothing more than to see a WCC FCS football conference, but it just isn't feasible.
