About twenty-five years ago, my mom was a patient at Letterman Army Medical Center, which was considered to be in the top five hospitals (military and civilian) in the US. She had back surgery. Two of her physicians were brothers - one an anesthesiologist and the other a surgeon. We discovered that they were USF alumni and had done the 3/4 program (USF/UCSF). The military had paid for their education and they would serve to repay their debt with their military service. Also, LAMC only accepted the cream of the crop. All of those doctors were handpicked. If someone failed to perform, he was transferred. (I know of one doctor who was sent to Alaska after he took all my dad's medications away from him. I will never forget the anger on the face of that colonel.)
These two surgeons were personable, kind and utterly brilliant. Those people who have done the 3/4 for medical or the 3/3 for law school could have matriculated at any university in the nation and been the top students.
My mom and I attended a Sunday mass at the hospital and she was delighted to discover that one of the brothers on duty was a practicing Catholic. We did not ask but we assumed that they chose USF because it was a Jesuit school.
Around that same time, I encountered a Kaiser doctor who was also quite intelligent (cardiologist). He was a USF alum. I observed his career at Kaiser and I used to smile each time some staff member commented on his brilliance and professionalism.
