The Gaels, with Tom Meschery, were in the Round of 16, in 1959. There was a stretch of 19 consecutive seasons when the representative of our conference played in the National Round of 16, the Regional Semi-Finals. USF did it on 9 occasions, Santa Clara 4, UOP 3 , and St. Mary's, Loyola and Pepperdine once each. During those seasons there were between 23 and 26 teams in the NCAA Tournament. So, only between seven and ten schools lost "play-in" games each year. Some people might want to place an asterisk next to tthe teams whose first game played in the tournment was in the National Round of 16. There were not a whole lot of teams out West, in those days. For example, Hardin-Simmons College, in Abilene, Texas, played in the West Regional a couple of times.
