A very good point re: RPI. Another benefit to the non-D1 game is that you can get an easy win (that counts on the official record) with taking an RPI hit.
I think the real issue, though, isn't so much that as it is the price for "guarantee" games has gone astronomical. It's pretty much impossible for a mid-major to buy a home game with no return without shelling our some serious cash - $50K+ as a starting point, and the numbers can get even higher quickly:
