Hi Gail, she is making sure that her smell is on the spot. She wants to be sure she is marking her territory so any intuders will know this is her territory. She might not have any intruders, but this is part of a dog's nature to make sure their areas are marked. Also even though she was just laying on the spot she also wants to make sure that NO intruders have been on that spot. And you might notice that sometimes she sniffs the ground before she lays down or she walks in a circle that is all part of the marking routine. So don't be disturbed by the behavior she is just doing what comes naturally.
