Scottish coin from the 1600s unearthed at archeological dig in Newfoundland
The Cape Breton Post
FERRYLAND, N.S. (CP) — A 400-year-old coin from Scotland has been unearthed at an archeological dig in eastern Newfoundland.
The gold coin was discovered earlier this week at the Colony of Avalon in Ferryland — a tourist site that includes an active archeological excavation.
The foundation that operates the site says the coin is significant because it is the first whole, gold coin found at the dig.
The 22-karat Sword and Sceptre coin dates back to 1601.
The colony was founded by George Calvert, later Lord Baltimore, in 1621. The Ferryland settlement was a failure, and its remains lay undisturbed for centuries.
Archaeologists have uncovered over one million artifacts to date, including gold rings, Portuguese ceramics and a sea-flushed privy.
The recently discovered Scottish coin was issued during the reign of King James VI of Scotland, two years before he ascended the throne of England as King James I.
