From the land of the Bluenose.....with my connections in low places at the airport I was stuck in first class on the way to my vacation. Sure was nice being pampered at least till Marie and I arrived in the Dominican Republic and found out what the local transportation was really like!
Hotel that we stayed in was the Playa Dora which was low on stars but interesting as a multitude of countries were represented at the hotel.
Sure didn't take Marie long to feel at home as she had the shops scouted within the first hour as I did the beach.
Talked to a few of the locals who indicated that a few swishers were there a few weeks ago and thought what the halibut as I gave it a try anyway finding just two coins on my aquatic quest on the first outing.
After a few days of our two week stint Marie and I ventured out to Sousa Beach and noticed...like last visit that an election was again taking place for EL Presidente so I threw my hat into the ring!
At least that day Marie had fun bartering with the locals as I hit the beach for some digging as the waves were just too high to swish.
This round trip was well worth the $40 that it cost me for the taxi ride from Hell as those bouys are darn right suicidal on the road! Marie had a shoppers day in heaven which paved the way for some further dig time for this bouy!
After that harrowing drive I buried myself deeply in the local house wine which I'm sure is just a step above kerosene.
Forgot to mention that it took darn near 8 days before we had hot water in the room which sure me son put the freeze on any "amourose" activity in room 5315 till the 9th day. Most of this "ice age" was aided by a quick run to the bar before entering the shower. Mind you each night I felt like I was bedding down on a slab of concrete with the noise from the air conditioner sounding like the warp engines on the star ship Enterprise ten fold which I keep well oiled with local "fuel."
If that wasn't bad enough lunch time turned out to be a community affair as I went up to the bar to see if Miss Bananna Mamma cared to join us and come back to find this bandito nibbling on my burger!
That day I was able to go into the water with next to no luck but did save someone from a world of hurt as i found a fishing line in my seive with 6 hooks on it. Moral to the story is wear something on your feet in the water here which will keep you from being bait. A few days after this find I moved a long spine urchin out to deep water. Recall many fishing seasons ago stepping on one of these in Jamaica and that sent a chill up my spine. The beaches here were infested with sellers hawking their wares and even the wildlife laid claim to their turf.
Later that day it was off to the plaza where I picked up supper
With a kazillion pesos left at the plaza we walked back to the resort and I was free to dig till the sun went down!
Wowzer! Awoke the next day with the waves pounding on the shores of my frontal lobe. Marie wanted to visit the Orange Market which was okay by me but looking at the waves as we walked the beach sort of made me a tad sea sick so I concentrated on swinging my Garrett picking up a peso, peso, peso um....cinco peso which was spent at the market. The sunset on the return trip was...............
Next day it was off to the beach again with my boat coming in or as Maxwell Smart would say .....would you believe a gondala rowed by six girl guides
Took a day off from digging and took a few photos of the fauna....enjoy!
Well me son this post is getting a tad long and I'm getting into the Brugal so I'll end this with photos of my finds!
Dominican coins=158
Canadian, American, Spanish, British, German and French finds. (58 coins)
And of course the keys and odds and sods!
