Hi Everyone:
Here is a VERY TENTATIVE outline on what I have so far on the John Honeycutt born abt. 1782 NC that migrated to Tennessee. This report is bound to change in the future as I continue my research on piecing this family together accordingly. I listed some of my reasonings or findings for each person so you can see why I beleive they belong to this family. Comments are always welcomed if you can either support or disprove anything on this tentative outline.
Dee Barton
There is no strong proof that John Honeycutt was the father of the children listed here EXCEPT for Alvis Honeycutt. The children I have listed were tied to John from many different materials and analysis.
From research, it looks like John migrated to Tennessee sometime before 1813. There is a John Honeycutt listed on the 1818 Campbell Co, TN Tax List. Campbell County borders Claiborne County on the west side. I believe John was first in Campbell County before he settled in Claiborne County. Also, there was a John Honeycutt who served in Brown's Regiment of the East Tennessee Volunteers during the War of 1812. In 1847, John deeded his land in Claiborne Co, TN to his son Alvis Honeycutt. Jacob and Michael Honeycutt were subscribed witnesses to the land deed. In approximately 1850, many Honeycutts from Claiborne Co, TN migrated to Indiana and I believe John went with them but returned to Tennessee before 1860.
This is most likely to be Sarah Moser. Sarah and John married in 1802 Randolph Co, NC with William Williams as the Bondsman. A William Williams was listed directly after a Urias Honeycut (alleged brother of John) in the Claiborne County, TN 1840 Census. A coincidence?
Also, there were 6 Moser households listed in the Orange Co, NC 1790 Census on the same page as Moses Honeycutt (alleged father of John). The two Moser households that interests me the most are Jacob Moser & Michael Moser since I have children for John & his wife named the same.
Possible Children of JOHN HONEYCUTT and UNKNOWN are:
Dorcus named two of her sons Alvis and Urias (same names as her alleged brothers). Alvis Brogan along with sons of Sarah Honeycutt & Robert Russell (Sarah being her alleged sister) formed a Methodist Church and had their picture taken for the newspaper. Alvis was noted on the back of the photograph as being a cousin to the Russell boys. This is how Dorcas was connected to being the daughter of John. Dorcus remained in Tennessee and did not migrate to Indiana with many of the other Honeycutt families from Claiborne Co, TN.
Children of Dorcus & John Brogan:
ALVIS, NELLY, LEETIE, SALLY, URIAS, WILBORNE, FRANKLIN, ORLEANA, TABITHA, & ELIZABETH.
Jacob first appears on census records in 1830 in Claiborne Co, TN. Jacob and John are the only Honeycutts that appear on this census. Jacob migrated to Brown Co, Indiana about 1850 and appears on the census there for that year. His family then appears there in the 1860 census but Jacob is gone. He probably died between 1850-1860.
Children of Jacob & Naomi Honeycutt:
CALVIN, STERLING, HIRAM, SYLVESTER, RACHEL, SALLY, DANIEL, JESSE, JOHN, JACOB JR., & HARRIETT.
I believe Naomi is the daughter of Jesse Pritchard who was also in Claiborne Co, TN. Naomi probably had a sister named Elizabeth. This Elizabeth Pritchard married Levi Goin and Naomi's son, Calvin Honeycutt, appears in Levi & Elizabeth's household in the 1850 Claiborne Co, TN census as a laborer.
After Hiram married he migrated to Weakley Co, TN which is in the far north-west portion of Tennessee. No other Honeycutts appear in this county and why he went there is a mystery. He appears on the 1830 & 1840 Weakley Co, TN Census. About 1849, he migrated to Greene Co, Illinois where other Honeycutts were residing.
There is reference to Hiram & Dice in a family Bible of Moses Honeycutt & Hannah Beeler. Hiram is about 10 years older then this Moses so he cannot be his father. This Moses Honeycutt named a son Hiram (along with many other children on this report) which then makes me think that these men, Hiram and Moses, are brothers. Some of Jacob Honeycutt's (alleged brother of Hiram) ended up in Illinois too.
Children of Hiram & Dice Honeycutt:
JAMES, HIRAM, JACOB, JANE & AMANDA.
Urias Honeycutt first appears on census records in the 1840 Claiborne Co, TN census and is listed right next to his alleged father, John Honeycutt. Urias' wife, Mary Russell, was a sister to Robert Russell who married Urias' sister Sarah. Urias' name appears on an inventory for Mary Russell's father's estate. There is also a court record for Urias in 1836 regarding him mistreating his step-son, Willis Russell. This court record referred to them as being previously of Campbell Co, TN. Urias & Mary migrated to Indiana about 1850, same time frame as "father" John & "brother" Jacob.
Children of Urias & Mary Honeycutt:
SARAH JANE RUSSELL, ANNA M., ROBERT R., HANNAH J., & EDITH M.
Sarah and her brother Urias both married Russell siblings. Sarah and her husband are both buried at Russell Cemetery in Claiborne Co, TN. Sarah remained in Tennessee and did not migrate to Indiana. Many sons of Sarah formed a new Methodist Church in Tennessee and their picture was taken for the paper along with "cousin" Alvis Brogan.
Children of Sarah & Robert Russell:
HIRAM, NANCY M., WILLIAM, ELIZABETH, HENRY, ROBERT FRANKLIN, JOSEPH TAYLOR, THOMAS JEFFERSON, ANNA M., JASON, & MILLARD FILMORE.
Notes for MOSES HONEYCUTT:
Moses did not marry till 1842 when he was about 23 years old. He married in Claiborne Co, TN. His census detail always indicates that he was born in TN. In 1840, the only household that shows a male as age 20-21 is John Honeycutt. There were no other households with any males marked in this age range. Moses' first two children were born in TN and the rest were born in Indiana. From census records, we can determine that he migrated to Indiana between 1849-1852, about the same time that the other Honeycutts did. There is a land patent in Brown Co, Indiana for a Moses Honeycutt. Sometime after the 1860 census, Moses left Indiana and went to Missouri where he remained.
Children of Moses & Hannah Honeycutt:
ISAIAH, MARY, LUCINDA, SARAH E., HIRAM, & JOSEPH.
Her full name could be Mary Elizabeth Honeycutt. The marriage date I have of 14 Oct 1841 could be the bond date. Another researcher of this branch has her marriage date as 10 Nov 1841.
Children of Elizabeth & William Houston:
CALVIN?, BENJAMIN F., JOHN, WILLIAM HARRISON, STERLING, SARAH, NAOMI, MARY JANE, CAROLINE, & JESSE P.
This could be Margaret Honeycutt who married W. G. Jones on 13 July 1853 in Brown Co, Indiana.
Alvis died at Camp Hospital in Cumberland Ford, Kentucky of Typhoid Fever while serving in the Civil War. He was a Private in Company D - 1st Voluntary Regiment of Tennessee under Captain Branson. Alvis enlisted at Cumberland Ford, Kentucky on February 24, 18?? and at the time of his death had served a total of 3 years.
In 1847, John deeded his land in Claiborne Co, TN to his son Alvis Honeycutt. Jacob and Michael Honeycutt were subscribed witnesses to the land deed. According to a statement made of Annanias Honeycutt (Annanais was hung for murder in Claiborne Co, TN--there is reason to believe he was innocent of this murder), his father Alvis went to Indiana but had returned to Tennessee a few years later.
Children of Alvis & Martha Honeycutt:
ANNANIAS, SARAH E., AMANTHA MARTHA, PETER S., MINERVA JANE, & NELLIE.
10. MALE HONEYCUTT, b. Bet. 1830 - 1835.
This could be Michael Honeycutt who married Eliza Costlow on 29 June 1855 in Brown Co, Indiana. This is not the Michael Honeycutt who was born in 1815 that married Sarah Robinson!
