Posted by Kurt - SFTrainGIFs on 10/25/2001, 7:10 pm On Wednesday night, we had technicians performing a scheduled upgrade to our main message board storage server. An additional hard drive was to be placed outside of the RAID array on this server -- but not to be placed within the RAID array. What is RAID? RAID stands for "Redundant Array of Independent Disks." Basically, it employs numerous hard drives in a fault tolerance matter -- if any hard drive in this machine were to fail, we would have been able to "hot swap" a new disk in, and it would have resulted in zero downtime. Unfortunately we were not told ahead of time by our providers' technicians that the procedure being performed was risky. This resulted in the RAID array "breaking" (as we have been told), and all data on each of the disks was lost. We certainly would not have agreed to perform this procedure if we knew there was any amount of risk involved. We have been informed that there is absolutely no means of restoring the data on those drives. Fortunately, we have a recent backup of all data on a separate server. This backup covers all posts and settings through Friday, October 19, 2001. We have made the appropriate DNS modifications, and this server is already in use. Your ISPs DNS may not be updated to reflect our changes, but you will be able to access your board soon. Additionally, technicians are currently working hard to get the old server back online, and when this is done we'll be able to redirect your members to your board regardless or whether their ISPs DNS has updated. We're very saddened and upset over this even and hope you will accept our apologies. All premium service customers will be credited with 14 days of their respective premium service as a sign of our appreciation for their understanding. To summarize, all messages and settings changes made between Saturday, October 20 and Wednesday October 24th will no longer be available. Thank you for your understanding, and again we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Boardhost
