Posted by JeanneP Any boat in extreme circumstances could break up. Lots of boats not considered blue water boats have completed circumnavigations, and many of the "best" boats have come to grief. Luck, the skill of the crew, and a lot of other variables, can make all the difference.

Years ago in Los Roques Islands (off the coast of Venezuela) we met a delivery crew on a Fontaine Pajot that they had taken across the Atlantic from France, headed for French Polynesia. They invited us aboard for a wonderful dinner, and we discussed the safety of modern catamarans. We were reassured that they were certainly seaworthy enough. This professional crew was quite proud of the Fontaine Pajot they were on. We saw that same boat in charter in Tahiti a year later, looking as good as when we had been aboard.
