Posted by Pete W on February 19, 2007, 8:22 pm, in reply to "Re: Summit Racing" As far as springs go- I had a set of Manley springs...after 40 or so passes I was adjusting valves after a race and I found 14 out of 16 springs broken..luckily nothing came apart. So I put a set of Schneider Super Clean 1.550 roller springs on the motor. They were slightly used-I had the springs checked on the bench and they were 220 LBS (seat pressure) +- 5 LBs....I too in the off season bought a Moroso Valve Spring checker and found that the exhausts were all about 210 to 215 LBS...which was good. I then checked the Intakes and they were all around 180 LBS..which made me worry. So I started calling around and asking questions, I got 1.6 rockers on the int. and 1.5 on exhaust. I swapped the rockers and found 20 LB difference in readings...meaning the int. went up 20 LBS and the exhaust all went down 20 LBS. I guess the 1.6 lever acts on the springs different than the 1.5 lever giving the different readings. Confirmed this with Harland And Sharp...I guess what I found was that the springs are all still good and now I have a baseline to check and if I find one low (like you did)its time to change them. Also, I found out that the Exhaust seat pressure is very important because the piston is chasing the exh valve as its closing...so if the valve hangs open the piston will hit it....on the intake side the piston is going the other direction. But again you don't want the valves to bounce at they close so they both need the proper seat pressure for that aspect of it.... I guess the long and short of it is to check springs as routine maintenance and if you find one or two low like you did time to replace before other things start to go on.....I think from now on, on new springs I will always check them on the bench tester before I install to make sure I don't have a bum spring...... I do like the Schneider 1.550 Super Clean Roller springs...they've got a few passes and are still good and the price is right at about $250 for a set..220 LBS seat and 610 Open and I think they'll take about .680 Lift (net).....
