Posted by Paul Strauser Used myself as a test in which you DO NOT need the persons military I.D. number, only his/her social security number. I received a copy of my discharge paper (DD-214) in a few weeks by following the instructions on the following web site (which was accessable as of October 2004): NARA eVerRecs.htm This is the site for the National Archives and Records Administration and you need to be either the military veteran or next of kin of a deceased former member of the military which can be any of the following - surviving spouse, father, mother, son, douaghter, sister, or brother. If you are not the veteran or next of kin you must complete a Standard Form 180 which you can obtain either by fax or download and then mail or fax it back to the appropriate address on the form. If you are the veteran or next of kin you do not need this Standard Form 180 and you can apply on line by following the instructions by clicking on "Request Military Records", entering the required information, printing out a form for you to sign and date that you then either mail or fax within 20 days of your request. There is no charge for the copy of the DD-214 Discharge Paper. Just be sure to mail or fax the correct form that is printed out and you should receive the DD-214 within a few weeks. Good Luck,

A friend of mine from the sixties asked how he could obtain a copy of his discharge papers.
