I am the grandson of S/SGT Dayton Jr. Strickland.(Anti-Tank) 71st Infantry Reg. 44th Division.
I have his personal journal that he had put into a professional binder in the mid-80's that are his reflections and general combat history of the regiment.
It records day-by day accounts and encounters from September 5, 1944 to July 14, 1945. He names places, people, details from attacks(Jan 1) to those KIA. NO words can truly share the horrors of war, but my grandfather does it in a manner and language that is readable, respectful, and thoughtful of those who would read his entries. He always protected his family and friends at many levels. Many names I recognize in queries on this sites postings from his journal. This is a document that shows what he and his "buddies" encountered. He had his personal journal compiled for the family and for those he knew who served with him about his experiences. I know he would want others to share in this history. It is a large part of my families history. How should I get this document to families of the 71st? It may also help answer other families questions of who, what, when , where and how. I am not sure where to start. I have also considered its value in regards to regimental history and have found yours to be the most up to date steward. He passed away in 1986 of colon cancer. Any suggestions?
