Hello Robert. My father, Sgt. Luther G. Ott, also served in the 44th, 71st Regiment. He also passed in 1980 @ age 57 of a malignant brain tumor. I probably don't know very much more than you, maybe less. You don't expect them to pass away that early in life, or we would have surely sat down and discussed the war a little more. There is a book, called " The Other Battle Of The Bulge - Operation Northwind" that may be of interest to you. My dad is actually mentioned on page 26,27, but it's about one of the bloodiest conflicts of the war, it just didn't get all the notoriety, probably because it wasn't under Patton. The book is written by Charles Whiting, you can find it on the net, your dad may be mentioned as well. Anyway, the 71st played a major role. The book was written in 1984, so mine never got the chance to see it, unfortunately. I hope this helps somewhat. By the way, my son went thru boot camp just north of Chicago,,,,Big Lake, I think it was called, I know this Chicago is one hell of a beautiful city, and I'm not a city-type fella, lot's of history. Good talking to you....Stan
