My father Walter Wierzbowski was in I company of the 44th division that was part of the 71st that fought in the Fern Pass, (he passed away a few years ago) He was shot on May 1st by sniper fire and did not participate in the rest of the battle to take Fernstein(? I think I have that spelling wrong) check out this web page http://44thdivision.efour4ever.com/ it has a good discription of most of the battle. My father's medic Will Tsuchida has a written account of one part of the engagment which he wrote to General Dean in order to get a silver star for one of the participants. You could also check out the US Army web page of combat Chronicles which list every acton each unit was in during the war. I have never heard who the German, Austrian Officer was, perhaps the German Arvhives have list of these things,Good luck in your search, ps company L accepted the surrender of Warner Von Braun near the Fern Pass
