Posted by Clockwise on 2/18/2005, 1:49:05, in reply to "Carl you here?" I do have something to report: Last night at approximately 1800 local time, we had our first attack on our Forward Operating Base since I have been here. At least three rockets, suspected of being fired by a timed trigger device(s), were fired on our position. From the impact pattern and the time of the attack, it is suspected that the intended target was the DFAC (Dining Facility or mess tent). None of the rockets hit or damaged any property and no one was injured (For OPSEC reasons, I cannot state the proximity of the impacts to any fixed sight, but I can tell you that if the DFAC was the target, it was missed by a wide margin). One of our Observation Posts took some small arms fire at approximately the same time. Again, no one was injured. The whole attack lasted only a few minutes and our security was never in jeopardy of being compromised. I was at my post at the time of the attack. While everyone else was taking cover, I grabbed my weapon, leaving my battle buddy under cover and manning our radio, and I moved out into the open to get several Third Country Nationals under cover. I then patrolled the area, just in case one or some of the Third Country Nationals were insurgents and there was to be a coordinated attack. As the attack started at sunset, I donned my Night Vision Goggles and continued to patrol until the all clear was sounded approximately an hour after Condition Red was declared. The rocket that impacted closest to my position was not close enough to have put me in any direct danger, but had it not been a dud, I would have definitely seen and felt the explosion. Shortly after the rockets impacted, artillery fired counter battery into the vicinity of the detected launch point of the rockets. At this time, I do not yet know if a patrol was sent out to the area of the suspected launch points or what was found. This is the first attack on this FOB in over a month. Considering that this FOB is in the same region as Baghdad, Fallujah, and Ramadi, and this FOB was attacked on a regular basis before the massive assault on Fallujah this past November, this is a vast improvement in security and proves that while there are still some minor factions left in Iraq that wish to inflict damage on Coalition Forces, they are weak and ineffective. The Iraqi People rejected them during their recent election, they cannot sustain operations, and they are now almost completely ineffective in their attacks. They are losing and we, along with the People of Iraq, are winning. By the way, in case you are reading this, Hadji, you made a mistake. All I can tell you is "Don't Mess With Texas!", and you WILL pay a price for not having followed that advice!
