I have done this also and made scenes for holidays. I have used backgrounds I made on Print Artist or software like that and then made individual small pictures with Boardmaker or pics from the web and used to work on prepositions, story scenes, artic etc.
I have bought inexpensive magnetic dots from Oriental trading.
