I love mneumonics! Some types of learning lend themselves better to it than others like math. If they are trying to remember a list of things then I have the kid think up a crazy story where he can form a picture in his head. The key is "crazy" though. The more vivid and bizarre the story is the greater the likelihood is that he'll remember it. I have worked with kids who's teachers swear they can't recall 3 things, recall a list of 10 arbitrary items. A good book for it is The Memory Book by Harry Larayne & Jerry Lucas ISBN # 0-345-41002-5.
