I teach functional reading to middle schoolers. Weekly, we read the newspaper. We cut coupons, which could later be used to match words in the grocery store. We look up events such as movies and sports. Talk about the directions of how to get there and/or how much money we may need if we wanted to go. We also read the cartoons or check out the daily TV guide. We also go on word hunts and cut out any words we may recognize and make word collages with them or I'll give them a list of words and they have to locate them and circle them in the paper. Just asking them to find as many "and" in the paper can be a great and easy activity. Hope this helps
