For about 3 weeks in a row, I incorporated a post office life skills activity into a writing lesson plan. All of my autistic students have IEP objectives that involve writing/typing their personal information given visual cues. I had each student type his/her name and address in the proper format for mailing a letter. They printed, cut and paste the work onto school envelopes. Next, each student Googled and printed an image (of personal interest) to place in the envelope. The students were going to mail the letters to themselves. The class walked to the post office and each student purchased his/her own stamp (social skill). The students referred to a model and placed the stamps in the proper corner of their envelopes. Last, they placed their letters in the mail slot. The students really enjoyed the activity and were able to complete each step of the task with fewer prompts by the third week.
