To teach cause/effect, you can cut a gray cloud and a big light blue rain drop out of construction paper. Make them about 4" each. Most kids seem to understand that the dark cloud is the cause, and rain is the effect. Then, I make several cause/effect scenarios with Boardmaker. Examples: the gate was left open, so the dog ran away; the girl was thirsty, so she drank water; the boy was sick, so he went to the doctor; etc. The kids then have to figure out which of the Boardmaker symbols is the cause (the open gate, for example) and which is the effect (the dog running away). They show their answers by placing the correct Boardmaker symbol on the cloud or the raindrop.
