When I worked in classroom like this, I found it easier to split the children into smaller groups and use the teacher and aides to run the other groups. This allowed them to become familiar with speech goals/activities and prevented the problem of the teacher using speech as a break time. I would have a main group that I ran that would introduce a theme, book and the target concepts and vocab. We would break up into 2 or three groups, my group was usually discrete trials realated to goals.
Another group would be an oral motor group using either Sensory Oral Motor Exercises (SOME) that utilize oral motor activities as well as following activities activities or a plan developed using the Talk Tools methodolgy.
Another group was an art group related to the activity, following directions, requesting materails etc....
