
Posted by alice on 3/22/2007, 11:42 pm, in reply to "increasing utterances" Even if he could only say one of the words in the sentences, he would hear you say them over and over and they'd be part of his understanding of the activity (I'm thinking of how it is when kids hear a simple book over and over -- maybe they can only say certain words, but they learn to expect the next words in the book). You could actually practice each of the words in the sentences and have him say them separately as a sequence of single words. Later they might start coming out as short sentences. This his how my multiply-disabled daughter increased her sentence length -- she is still very delayed, but her sentences have increased from single words to three-and-four word sentences. For example, for a long time she'd repeat after us, "I..... want.....more.....yogurt" as a sequence of separate words. Now she can say, "I want more yogurt please."

Could you make some two-or-three word sentences that describe getting ready for and playing a soccer game? You could find/take pictures (or pantomime the actions) that showed the things and practice saying them with him:
Shirt on
Shorts on
Shin guards on
shoes on
kick ball
run down field
score a goal
etc....
