Hi,
It depends on the child, if he/she is a high functioning or an above average or an average child you could explain and it works. I ususally ask them what did you watch this morning(TV)? Do you realy like it? It's time to turn it off.
If it happens again I just cue them, "turn it off" Some time even say "turn the movies off". To reduce audtiory overload I also keep a picture of the TV which has the caption, "Turn it off".
