I just had to tell you about a funny new twist on the wonderful game of Apples to Apples (I learned about it on this site, and it is my most requested game. My students would do nothing but play it every time if I'd let them. We have to save it for special occasions.) Well, the game is only fun if you have four players or more, and a lot of my groups only have three (counting me). Today one of the students asked if Mr. Dog could play with us -- he's a little stuffed dog who lives on my cabinet. Mr. Dog participated by randomly choosing the top card from his pile each time. When the "judge" would read the cards on each turn (they are all put in anonymously, so the judge has no idea whose card he picks as the winner), it was just hilarious on every turn to figure out what choices Mr. Dog had submitted. And the funniest thing of all was that Mr. Dog won! I did this with two different groups, and Mr. Dog won both times, by actually having the best answer. I've had some hyper-competitive groups of kids, and adding Mr. Dog to the group took away their cutthroat attitude. The kids were laughing so hard they could hardly talk a few times, and they left the room still giggling. Just had to share that idea -- and thank whoever first mentioned Apples to Apples.
