I have worked with some severely disabled students at the high school level who were enrolled in alternative programs. One of the things we did was to use pictures of actual places in the community that these students had the opportunities to visit. I tried to contact a parent to see where they shopped or places they liked to visit around the area. Each family is so unique that it gave me insight into what their expectations were for their child as well. Then I used photographs taken outside the stores or places during our therapy sessions. It made sense to discuss places and things that were familiar to the students. We were able to work on vocabulary, pragmatic skills, etc. The list was endless. If the class was going out into the community each week I discussed with the teacher where they would be going and what the students would be expected to do. That way I could work "ahead of time" with them to be better prepared.
