Every Saturday morning during the summer, the Chess'n Math Association (CMA) runs a chess club for youngsters. The club meets on the 4th floor of the CMA headquarters which are located at 3423 St-Denis near the Sherbrooke Metro Station.
Beginning this Saturday, youngsters 8 years old and over will be required to write their moves when playing their games. This will allow the instructor (Gilbert Delisle) to go over the games afterwards. Initially it will distract a little from the concentration of the youngster while he or she is playing but once they get use to it, it will become second nature...and the advantage is that with the written moves, this can help coaches to point out errors in understanding which will allow the student to advance more quickly. Writing your moves also has an added advantage...it forces you to slow down! Most players starting out play way too fast. By having to write their moves, they will automatically begin to slow down.
If you don't know how to write a chess game (called Chess Notation), not to worry! It's easy! The club director will show you how it is done or you can see for yourself by going to:
Chess Notation
The club meets from 10 am - 12:30 pm every Saturday until August 22, 2009. Cost is $12 per week or $65 for the session. You don't have to reserve in advance...simply show up.
Information about the club appears here:
Saturday Club for Youngsters
See you on Saturday!
