Now that the Scholastic Chess season is either over or about to finish, many parents have asked me how their kids can keep up some Chess over the Summer. My response follows:
-on this site are Toronto Chess camps-fun and recommended.
-Tactics,tactics,tactics....a few daily-5-10 or more will keep kids in a chess frame of mind.Best books are-"Winning Chess tactics for Juniors" by Lou Hays and" Chess 5334 problems ,combinations, games",by Laszlo Polgar.
-Also Jeff Coakley's " Winning Chess Exercises for Kids" is well recommended. All books available through www.strategygames.ca
-of course play the game frequently-friends,siblings,chess computers etc.
Chess like any other sport or discipline must be constantly practiced properly for improvement to take place, especially in the off-season if one wants to see good results during the season. For instance, minor league Hockey players and competitive age-group swimmers are always on a properly organized off-season training programme. The same should be for Chess players-especially competitive players.
Most of all have fun and a great Summer.....
ps.this is very general, for with more highly rated kids a more specific programme with more emphasis on end game training and openings would be in order.
